Elijah Dawson is my great great great great grandfather. Apparently he also fathered a child to an Aboriginal woman, something our family only discovered recently. Hoping to get some DNA testing done soon to confirm…

In our family records we are related to Elijah Dawson. According to our records he fathered a child to an aboriginal woman. The child’s name was Elizabeth Dawson from Busselton WA. Elijah’s aboriginal daughter was married to my great grandfather Joseph (Joe) Hill.

  3. Pamela Griffiths says:

Elijah Dawson was my great great great Grandfather. On Elizabeth’s and Joseph’s marriage Certificate dated 5th March 1880 it says that George Dawson was her father although George would only have been 12 or 13 at the time …

That is intriguing. This must indicate either some errors made in the research, or perhaps the dating is incorrect. Dates given before the 20th century can often be out by a few years. The Elijah Dawson line is a side-line to my family line so I don’t have much information on Elijah’s children. The person to contact would be Val Williams. I mentioned her at the bottom of the story on Elijah. Click on her name and you will get her contact details.

Hi Pamela, We have met. I’m the great great grand daughter of Elijah Dawson and Ann Wakeham. I have DNA proof of this. My great gran was Elizabeth Dawson, child of Ann and Elijah, who had two sons with James Moore of Bunbury and later married Robert Shaw Finlayson. She was not indigenous. The story of either Elijah or his son George having a child with an indigenous woman, is just that – a story. It’s a tangled web woven reading the Hill family tree’s origins. The fact the Hills’ marriage certificate states George as Elizabeth’s father is not proof. Back in the day, people claimed what suited, it does not mean it was the truth. DNA is the only way to establish ancestry. Remember, there was another, unrelated, Dawson family in the Busselton area at the time. Just because the Hills claim Elijah as their ancestor does not make it so. Sincerely, Diana
